“In a book of the new art words don’t transmit any intention; they’re used to form a text which is an element of a book, and it is this book, as a totality, that transmits the author’s intention.” says conceptual book artist Ulises Carrión in his manifest ‘The New Art of Making Books’. Carrión defined the process of creating a book as a search for its ideal space-time sequence, in which a book is a collection of spaces perceived at different moments. This statement made me question if we perceive a book in the right way, so I took a deep dive into what books should consist of. With the visual statements, I’m trying to put this research into imagery.

In this book I tried to play with the layers and pages by lasering out a text. This visual statement carries the message that the books we define as a books, are not the only thing that can be book.

The last visual statement takes the next step, by saying that anything can be a book. By defining a book as a space-time sequence, a book can become a performace, an exhibition or an artwork with multiple dimensions.
