‘De Rode Draad’ is an awareness campaign about Dutch cold cases, created to bring unsolved life crimes back into the spotlight. The project consists of 12 unfinished portraits of different victims: Jaïr Soares, Tanja Groen, Anouschka Weezenbeek, Augustine Nyantakyi, Sedar Soares, Roeland Oosten, Wies Hensen, Jan van der Pool, Fatiha Hasnaoui, Diana Winkel, Judit Nyari and Patrick van der Bolt. The portraits are unfinished because the cases are unresolved or incomplete. ‘De Rode Draad,’ is a reference to the well-known detective signs, but also an abstract reference to blood. Not only is it important to give these people a face and name, it remains important to acknowledge the suffering that has been done to them. The aim of the project is not only to give people a better understanding of the cases, but also to give insight into the structural problems that arise in detection.
